About the Graves Hotel
After the fire of 1907 left much of the business district of Harlowton razed to the ground, local entrepreneur and town patron AC "Chris" Graves began plans to build a new hotel as a sort of love letter to the town that had been so good to him. Affectionately dubbed "The Father of Harlowton," Mr. Graves and his contractors, Shueman & McNeese, broke earth on June 2nd, 1908 on what would become the Graves Hotel.
The hotel is built from sandstone, cut and laid by the brilliant stonemason and German immigrant August Pollman with the assistance of workers from Harlowton. It was the first sandstone structure built in the town and is an interesting example of the style of architecture that was en vogue at the time.
Almost exactly a year later, in June of 1909, the Graves Hotel was complete. The hotel in its original form boasted 45 rooms with electricity, heating, and plumbing and was wired for 150 electrical lights and an "intercommunicating telephone system." The grand opening of the Graves Hotel was held on June 19th, 1909, and was quite literally the party of the century for Harlowton.
Now, over 110 years later, the Graves Hotel has been restored to its former glory in the tranquil town of Harlowton. It has seen a few different owners, thousands of guests over the years, and in 1980 was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
